Five Years of Live Music at Beetle Bar!
It's been five glorious years since Beetle Bar started supporting live original music from Brisbane, interstate and overseas. In that time, the venue has played host to over 2500 bands, most of those being local and we're very proud of that!
We thought we should throw a massive party to celebrate, so we bloody well are!

Spencer P Jones and the Escape Committee
More widely known as a founding member/guitarist with The Beasts of Bourbon, Spencer has been an active part of the Oz music scene for 20 plus years. From early obscure inner city scufflings with The Emotional Retards and Cuban Heels, to the hilarious psychedelic cabaret of The North 2 Alaskans and the gold status cowpunk incontinence of The Johnnys. He has been guitarist sideman to a slew of legends including Paul Kelly, Lydia Lunch, Andrew Williams, Jeffrey Lee Pierce's Gun Club, The Saints' Chris Bailey, Renee Geyer and The Violent Femmes just to name a few. We are proud to have him here in Brisbane with the original Spencer P Jones and the Escape Committee lineup to headline the celebrations.
Mick Medew & The Mesmerisers
Mick Medew’s name is synonymous with the Brisbane underground scene. In the late ‘70s and with bandmates who went onto the Hoodoo Gurus, the Hitmen and Died Pretty, he was a member of legendary inner-city act The 31st before kick-starting the Screaming Tribesmen with drummer Murray Shepherd (Fun Things) and bassist John Hartley and seeing the band launch to International status in the 80's and 90's. Mick was recently awarded the Grant McLennan Lifetime Achievement award at the QMA's in Brisbane and we're just over the moon for him and very excited to have him playing with his other incarnation, Mick Medew and the Mesmerisers.
Playing their first ever shows at Beetle Bar, way back when, they were forced to come up with a name for the Time Off ad deadline we had looming. They came back to us with 'Some Jerks' and it stuck! Their sexy garage/surf rock is inspired by the girl groups and garage rock of the 60’s, they're quoted as “sounding like Sleater-Kinney covering the Shangri-las.” With a pedigree covering decades in the Brisbane scene, their members have played in bands including Aampirellas, Brindle, Little Vegas and the Fuzz Parade and Los Huevos. Sex kittens with guitars.
Grit and gripe, bitter and bent. Bloody kisses on your salty wounds. Sex and Sadness – the Shifting Sands mantle. The drunken fathers of the band, Geoff Corbett (Sixfthick, The Tremors) and Dylan McCormack (Gentle Ben & His Sensitive Side, Dave McCormack & The Polaroids) birthed the band in 2012. Now the life boat is full with Anna Clifford (Johnny & The Fembots, Family Jordan), the delightful and enigmatic Alex "Alligator" Dunlop on skins and the so-relaxed-we-better-check-his-pulse Dan Baebler on electric guitar. This is the full-blown, terminal INCONSOULABLE SHIFTING SANDS.
Formed in Brisbane the mid-90's and infamously the first band to ever play Rics Bar, Lewd were best described by Rolling Stone as "embracing rock's essence, minimalist riffing, headlock grooves and suggestive, dark but humorous lyrics." Lewd were a regular occurance at legendary Brissy festivals such as 4zzz market days and Livid, as well as supporting everyone from Midnight Oil to Link Wray. Now after 2 decades since they called it a day, the core of the band plus some new additions have returned for a series of one-off live shows to re-kindle their gritty swamp-rock flame.
These guys hail from Tarrawanna, you probably haven't heard of it. They are loud. They are stoner rock. They are gonna get right into the ear cockles of your head. The Wollongong locals have shared stages with the
mightiest of all mighty rock lords, including Turbonegro, Supersuckers, Brant Bjork, Regurgitator, Beasts of Bourbon, Cosmic Psychos, Tumbleweed, and most recently supporting Violent Soho in Sydney on their sold out Australian tour. Fists in the air people.
DJ WOLVIE TRASH
He lurks. He loves. He leaves a mysterious taste in your mouth. He brings the best songs to the party and you end up passed out in a pile of your own spew with your calves and thighs aching for more and your memory wiped. You know you had a good time and you know were transported to that other dimension.
