Émile Zola's classic tale of lust and murder adapted for the stage by Olivier Award-winner Nicholas Wright.
Paris in the 1860s. In a dingy apartment on the Passage du Pont-Neuf, Thérèse Raquin is trapped in a loveless marriage to her sickly cousin, Camille. The numbing tedium of her life is suddenly shattered when she embarks on a turbulent affair with her husband’s earthy friend Laurent, but their animal passion for each other soon compels the lovers to commit a crime that will haunt them forever.
'Nicholas Wright's outstandingly well-written and acute new version... unforgettable' - - Observer
'A potent, dark group portrait of selfishness and obsession'
- - Independent on Sunday
First performed in this version on the National Theatre's Lyttleton stage in 2006, this is a gripping, claustrophobic account of how unbridled depths of passion lead to a terrible act. Thérèse Raquin plays in Putney Arts Theatre's studio space from August 4th to August 8th. We are looking for actors to play the following roles. (ages given as a guideline)
Thérèse Raquin: Seemingly self-contained, enigmatic, striking. (20s/early 30s)
Camille Raquin - her husband: Spoiled, bullying, something of a hypochondriac. (20s/early 30s)
Madam Raquin - his mother: Fussy, needy, domineering. (late 40s/50s/60s)
Laurent - Camille's friend: Handsome, energetic, passionate. (20s/early30s)
Monsieur Grivet. - an office worker: Pernickity, fastidious, gossipy. (40s or older)
Monsiuer Michaud - A retired Police Inspector: Bombastic, self-important, self -righteous. (50s or older)
