Capitiane Bougainville Theatre: 7.30pm
The Auckland Youth Orchestra contrasts the colour and energy of Russian music with the optimism and the excitement of a ‘new world’ which America brought to the European tradition.
The first half of the concert opens with Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances, followed by Shostakovich’s exciting and challenging first cello concerto performed by the winner of the AYO 2014 Soloist Competition, Jacky Siu.
The Toccata for Percussion by Mexican composer Carlos Chavez opens the second half, and the concert concludes with The New World Symphony of Dvorak, one of the most accessible and popular symphonies ever written.
