Commanding twang-pop sass
What do you get when you cross Joan Jett’s rocker sass, Hayley Williams’ spunky pop chops and Grace Potter’s country twang? You get Ohio native Angela Perley, a dynamic frontwoman who commands the stage with her booming voice and incisive lyrics. Backed by the Howlin’ Moons—that would be bassist Billy Zehnal, guitarist Chris Connor and drummer Jeff Martin—Perley is winning over nonbelievers the old-fashioned way: tireless touring and well-crafted albums such as 2014′s Hey Kid. In a perfect world, the latter would be all over the radio: Songs such as the barnstorming hard rocker “Hurricane” and the rootsier, pedal steel-driven “Ghost” are irresistible earworms with indelible choruses. Live, Hey Kid’s songs are even more mesmerizing, which is a testament to the musical chemistry between Perley and her bandmates.
