Thursday 11 June 2015, sees the hugely welcome return visit to Ashington of the brilliant songwriter, performer and humourist Martin Stephenson (of "and The Daintees" fame).
Always popular on the circuit, Martin's must see live performances are an exuberant tour-de-force combining heart-in-your-mouth intimacy with playful humour and warm-deprecation. Martin's musical journey is a joyful excursion through the music he loves - folk, ragtime, jazz, rockabilly, show-tunes, punk-pop and country......pleased that the never-ending journey is finding time to stop off in Ashington!
The 1986 critically acclaimed album "Boat to Bolivia" opened up an interesting story and showcased Martin's song-writing, poetic romanticism and spiritual depth and marked him out then as the cream of the leftfield crop back in the self-obsessed 1980's. As well as reuniting Martin with the Daintees, the last album 2013's "California Star" continued the trend for eclectic roots song-writing and is the perfect middle-aged bookend on a discography now amounting to 40 albums.
Here's what the music people think:-
"Martin's a sensitive man with a beautiful soul and a big smile making gorgeous" music" Janice Long BBC Radio 2
"Given time the Stephenson songs will warm you down to the bone marrow" Q Magazine
"Martin's beautiful music and good vibes have been part of my radio programming for close to 30 years. His enthusiasm and warmth infuse everything he does. Long may he run" Bob Harris BBC Radio 2
"Irresistible" - Mike Slaughter, Ashington Town Council
