A Salute to B.B. King with Blues Man Milton Hopkins
@ Monday Nite Jazz Jam!!!
This Week the world lost another music legend, The King of the Blues, Mr. B.B. King. B.B. had become the most renowned Blues musician of the past 50 years and the
"Original' Monday Nite Jazz Jam presents a salute to the legacy of this Blues master with our special guest, Blues guitarist Milton Hopkins.
Milt is the cousin of Blues legend Sam Lightnin' Hopkins and he is known as Houston's 1st Gentleman of the Blues. During the 1940's he played along side of B.B. King and music greats Sam Cooke, Little Richard and including Motown legend Marvin Gaye.
The Blues presupposes Jazz and many musical genres was built off of the Blues including Rock & Roll, R&B, and Jazz. For more than a half century Riley King better known a B.B. King, has defined the Blues for a worldwide audience; FYI - the B.B. is the acronym for "Blues Boy", and now you know!
A quick story about "Lucille", his guitar; In the mid 1950's B.B. was performing at a dance in Arkansas when two men got in a fight that knocked over a kerosene lamp and set fire to the hall.
King raced outside to safety with everyone else then realizing he had left his beloved guitar inside, he rushed back in the burning building to retrieve it, narrowly escaping death! Later he found out that the fight was over a lady named Lucille and he decided to give this name to his guitar to remind him never to do a crazy thing like fighting over a women!!!
Join us this Monday as we pay tribute to the King of the Blues, Mr. B. B. King, featuring Houston's 1st Gentleman of the Blues, guitarist Milton Hopkins. This week we bring
you best of both worlds, one of Houston's finest Jazz ensembles with a touch of the Blues!
