The Way Station continues its Tribute Series with A Birthday Homage to Bob Dylan on May 23, 2015 from 10PM to midnight. To honor Mr. Dylan’s birthday, and for your listening pleasure, we proudly present The Zimmymen and The Wimmymen, a merry band of latter-day Dylanologists, allied with (Brooklyn’s own) The Hollows, who will perform the album Blonde on Blonde in its entirety, track by track. This show will mark the 17th year that the Zimmy’s have put their unique spin on the work of Dylan, and the third consecutive year at The Way Station.
Blonde on Blonde was released in May of 1966, with many critics considering it the high water mark of Dylan’s fierce genius - the culmination of a creative frenzy that gathered speed with 1965’s Bringing It All Back Home, followed by Highway 61 Revisited, and climaxing with the third of his electric trilogy, Blonde on Blonde. Quieter albums followed – John Wesley Harding and Nashville Skyline. Dylan never really got back to “that thin wild mercury sound” he achieved with a synod of Nashville session players in the winter and early spring of 1966. No doubt The Zimmymen and The Wimmymen will stoke the flames of that mid-60s wildfire, and you’ll find out “what salvation must be like after a while.”
The Way Station Tribute Series has included The Zimmymen and the Wimmymen performing Dylan's 1975 release Blood on The Tracks as well as 1965’s Bringing It All Back Home; a Lou Reed Birthday Tribute that included seven bands reimagining the music of New York’s own proto-punk proselytizer; the warmly received tribute to The Byrds’ Sweetheart of the Rodeo, with five bands reinterpreting this seminal 1968 release in sequential order; and our Tom Waits Night, which included James Godwin’s Tom Waits puppet as master of ceremonies, three outstanding young singer songwriters with their personal takes on his words and music, and Big in Japan’s rousing two-hour paean to America’s most fearless keeper of the avant-garde. And we can’t wait for our chance to honor 50 years of music from The Grateful Dead on August 19, 2015.
