Thank you all for taking the time to read about this wonderful event! Many of you know about this cause and event already, but some of you I have never had the pleasure of meeting. Let me take a moment to explain who I am and talk about Running for the Aurora 12.
My name is Amanda Teves and I have created this event page in honor of my fiance, Alex Teves, who lost his life while saving mine in the Aurora Movie Theatre Tragedy on July 20, 2012. My heart always searches for a purpose. A way to help those in need. A way to make something positive come from the tragic event that happened nearly two and a half years ago.
The Colfax Half-Marathon that I participated in on May 15, 2011 holds a special place in my heart. This race was the foundation of a very beautiful memory in Alex’s and my relationship, one of the million that I hold close to my heart. Two years ago, I had an urge to sign up for the same race in hopes that it would bring me a small sense of peace and comfort. I had decided that I would dedicate each mile to one of the 12 people who lost their lives on July 20th. I commemorated this by changing my t-shirt, that had a picture and name of the person, at every mile marker. My heart was overwhelmed with joy on race day when I realized just how many people came to support me and join me in such a special experience. It was powerful to see how much this impacted everyone who was gracious enough to be there with me. It was such a beautiful day and I'm so thankful to the 40+ people who shared it with me, you made that day all the more special.
Last year, I wanted to spread this same type of experience to even more people, allowing them to run or volunteer in memory of the Aurora 12 and create some peace and healing for themselves. We had an incredible turnout with roughly 15 5k runners, 13 half-marathon runners, 3 marathon runners, 2 urban 10-miler runners, and countless volunteers! My heart was beyond full from sharing such a wonderful experience with so many people and my hope is that those numbers continue to grow!
I have set it up again this year for us all to be a team and to allow people to raise funds on Alex's behalf. You can spread the word about the amazing event you are participating in and raise funds or even have other people you know join our team!
You can choose to be a part of the 5k, 10k, Half-Marathon, Marathon, or the Relay on May 16/17, 2015. With all of the races you can be a part of our team! Just choose the ACT Foundation when you are asked about which charity partner you would like to run for in the registration (www.runcolfax.org). It is free of charge to choose a foundation to run for!
If any of you are interested in running the half-marathon to honor the 12 beautiful lives that were lost in Aurora just as I did two years ago, I have a way for everyone to participate in a similar way. Instead of changing t-shirts, at each mile marker, there will be someone handing out ribbons. These ribbons will have a name and the designated mile which will be tied to your shoe laces. This way it won't hinder your running and it will look really neat once you've collected all of the ribbons! That being said, if there are people in town who would like to be a part of this but have no interest in running, I could use your help in passing out these ribbons!
For those of you who weren't there last year, the extra mile in the half-marathon I chose to dedicate to the first responders. The police officers, fire fighters, paramedics and everyone in between hold a very special place in my heart because of what I experienced that night and I am happy to say that the same mile will be dedicated to them again this year! They participated in such an amazing way in last years race, from our motorcycle police escort throughout the Aurora section of the race, to fire fighters running mile 8 with us, to having a tunnel of policemen flash their lights and cheer us on after we ran through the fire station. It was beyond incredible and something I will never ever forget.
For those of you that aren't able to be there this year and would still like to be a part of it, I wanted to introduce you to the foundation that was set up in Alex's name. The Alexander C Teves (ACT) Foundation provides funding for scholarships, mentor programs and opportunities to students with unique academic, social, and/or emotional needs. Any donation will be made directly to Humanex Academy, where Alex did his grad school internship and touched the lives of many students. A donation of any kind would mean the world to Alex, his family, and myself. You can find more information here: www.alexanderctevesfoundation.org
Here is the link to sign up for the race: www.runcolfax.org
I will provide more detailed information as we get closer for those who are interested (start times, course map, meeting place, etc.). Please reach out to me if you have any questions at all!
All of you are truly amazing for participating in this race with me, in whatever form you choose. Thank you all for your continued love and support. I am excited for this to be even bigger and more beautiful than last year XOXOXO
