Original “Thelma & Louise” T-Bird Featured Among 100 Classic & Vintage American Cars
The 21st Annual Gilmore Heritage Auto Show will take place on Saturday, June 6 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Original Farmers Market at 3rd & Fairfax in Los Angeles. The theme of the 2015 edition is 60 Years of Fearless Flying: A Tribute to the Ford Thunderbird. This year’s show will feature more than 100 classic and vintage American cars, including a wide variety of Thunderbirds from the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s, as well as the iconic Thunderbird featured in the Oscar® winning movie “Thelma & Louise,” starring Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis. The beloved car, on display courtesy of The Petersen Automotive Museum, became a highly recognizable part of popular culture after its major role in the film.
Billed by Ford as a ‘personal luxury car,’ the two-seat convertible T-bird became available to the public during the 1955 model year. It was a sleek, athletic and sophisticated car that carried the mechanical reliability of standard Ford vehicles. With a fiberglass hardtop, half-covered rear wheel openings and whitewall tires, the Thunderbird brought high-end style to a V8 engine with 193 horsepower. After 11 generations, the car exited production in 2005, but it remains an automotive icon today as well as a favorite amongst automotive enthusiasts.
“We’re excited to celebrate 60 years of the classic Thunderbird,” said Ilysha Buss, Farmers Market Marketing Director. “These cars truly symbolize American popular culture. The quality and variety of cars at our show always makes it enjoyable, but having beautiful and iconic T-birds on display will make this year especially memorable.”
The Gilmore Heritage Auto Show, which is free to the public, is known for the up-close-and-personal access it grants spectators, as fans are able to walk among the more than 100 classic cars on display and visit with car owners throughout the day. The cars on display span five decades, from a 1927 Ford Model T to a 1979 Ford T-bird Ranchero. Among the show cars this year are several Corvette Stingrays, Ford Mustangs and Chevrolet Chevelles. For a grand finale, all show cars participate in a spectacular end-of-show drive off at 5 p.m., traversing the entire Farmers Market property.
