The Hawick Common Riding is traditionally the first and largest of the Border festivals. It celebrates the capture of the Abbot of Hexham's banner during the Hornshole Skirmish of 1514, and the ancient tradition of riding the marches and protecting the common lands of Hawick and Wilton. Though the festival begins in May, the ceremony proper begins on Common Riding Friday.
