DIRECTIONS TO MUD RIVER DAM
1. Approaching WV from West (Huntington/Kentucky) take State Route 10/Marshall University/Hal Greer Blvd. Exit (exit number 10 or 11, I believe) - turn right at end of exit ramp onto State Route 10 heading south; travel to intersection of Route 10 and Route 3 at West Hamlin (approx. 25 miles), at intersection go straight (onto State Route 3); proceed on State Route 3 approx. 5 miles, just before reaching Hamlin town limits, there is a Save-a-lot grocery store on right side of road where Upper Mud River Road (marked by green road sign) turns to right; turn right onto Upper Mud River Road and travel 14 miles to the Dam recreation area, stage will be on softball field, within sight of Mud River Road on left.
2. Approaching from Charleston, Take Hurricane exit off I-64 (exit number 34), turn left at the end of the exit ramp; travel approx. 200 yards to stop light (past fast food, gas, etc.); turn right onto State Route 34 south; travel to next stop sign (approx 2 miles) where Route 34 intersects with US Route 60; turn left onto Route 60 East, travel approx 200 yards until Route 34 south turns to right; get back on Route 34 south by bearing right and travel to its end (approx. 15 miles); Route 34 ends in a T intersection with Route 3 just east of Hamlin; at the stop sign turn right onto Route 3 west (about two miles outside Hamlin); proceed through town on Route 3; after passing football field, you come into a straight stretch, passing new Lincoln County High School, McDonald's, and Dollar General, nearing Save-a-lot grocery on left side; turn left onto Upper Mud River Road, travel 14 miles to Dam recreation area
Second choice from Charleston would be heading south on US-119 (Corridor G) approximately 14 miles, turning off (to the right) onto WV State Route 214 at Alum Creek, traveling approx. 9 miles until Rt. 214 ends, merging to the right on WV State Route 3; travel approximately 12 miles through Hamlin, WV; on the outside of town, just past the Lincoln County High School, right next to a McDonald’s and Dollar General Store, Upper Mud River Road turns to the left (marked with a festival sign); travel 14 miles to the Dam Recreation Area (on the left; festival grounds are within 100 yards to the left.
Third choice from Charleston would be number three below (heading down south on US-119 approximately 20 miles until you turn right onto Route 3 at Julian, follow the rest of the directions below); DO NOT take this if you’re driving a bus, as the road is narrow and curvier than the other choices but the shorter by 15 minutes from Charleston.
3. Approaching from South (Pikeville/Logan/Madison), Traveling on US119 North, approximately 5 miles north of Madison, turn left off of US119 onto WV State Route 3 (at Julian); drive 5.2 miles on Route 3 to Alkol; turn left onto Bulger Road (at Alkol Post Office and Stowers Store; at the mouth of Bulger Road is a DNR sign with a fishing symbol directing traffic to the Dam) -- note for bus travel: Bulger Road is a 2-lane road (divided by center line), but is narrow and curvy in many places--plan on averaging about 25 mph; drive 7.5 miles to the end of Bulger Road where it intersects with Upper Mud River Road at Spurlockville; at the stop sign, turn right on Upper Mud River Road and travel 4 miles to the Mud River Recreation Area Picnic and Beach Facility (on the right) where the stage area can be seen (about 100 yards) from the road
